It was hunted to extinction in less than eighty years.

It is also very romantic at night as the sunsets to the east. Mauritius draws a lot of honeymooners but is off the beaten patch of many western natives.

Top Beaches
Pereybere - A public beach located on the North region of the island. Pereybere beach is very popular and is best known for its many watersports, shopping and its many resturants/pubs.
Ile aux Cerfs (Deer Island) - Located on the East Region of the island, Ile aux Cerfs is another watersports destination for the island that is perfect for scuba divers and parasailers. The island also has facilities where it is possible to rent speedboats, water skies and water scooters. But not only water sports, Ile aux Cerfs also has a great 18 hole golf course tucked away.
Belle Mare Beach - If you want to get away from everyone, lay in the sun and occassionally swim you need to come to this beach. It is a white sand beach that does not have alot of the commercial highlights. It is one of the beaches that offers a quite setting where one can regain sanity.
Mont Choisy - Located on the North region, it is the longest stretch of beach on the island. It is mostly known for its white sands and great facilities.
