History of Perpignan, France

Oct-6-2010 By GuestPoster

If you are planning to holiday and do some sightseeing in the South of France, then you might as well stop by the pretty city of Perpignan. And during your visit, it would be worth knowing about the history of Perpignan so you can fully appreciate its culture and what it as to offer in this present time. To know more about the colorful history of Perpignan France, here is some important information to get you started.

Based on historical records, Perpignan was founded as early as the tenth century. It was first mentioned in Vila Perpiniarum (a document) in year 927. This simply means that this Medieval town has long been thriving even before the Roman times. The city soon became the Count of Roussillon’s capital. In 1972, however, Count Gerard II left his lands to the Counts of Barcelona. It was in 1197 that Perpignan became a self-governing commune. Through the Treaty of Corbeil in 1258, the feudal rights of the French over Roussillon were yielded by Louis IX.

It was in 1276 that Perpignan became the capital of the new state’s mainland territories. This happened when James I, also known as the Conqueror, Count of Barcelona and King of Aragon, established the Majorca Kingdom in the same year. The decades that followed were considered as the city’s golden age. It became quite prosperous and became the center of many trades such as cloth manufacturing, goldsmiths, leather work and other luxury crafts. In 1285, King Philip of France died in Perpignan after he returned from his crusade against the King of Aragon.

It was in 1944 when Peter IV of Aragon once again annexed Perpignan and the kingdom of Majorca. And because of this historic event, Perpignan once again became part of the Barcelona County. When the Black Death plague came, its population greatly took a fall. In 1463, Louis XI of France attacked and occupied Perpignan and in 1473 an uprising against the French rule was put down. In 493, however, Charles VIII of France restored Perpignan back to Ferdinand of Aragon so that he can conciliate with Spain and become free to pursue his plans to invade Italy.

In 1642, Perpignan was once again invaded and captured by French forces during the Thirty Years War. The history of Perpignan reached a decisive moment when, seventeen years later, under the Treaty of the Pyrenees, it was formally ceded by Spain and became part of France until the present time. Today the city is a bustling hub of activity with a multi cultural population displaying the best of both French and Catalan culture. The best way to enjoy the city is to find yourself a self catering apartment in Perpignan fom which you can explore the city at your leisure.
